(Arbitrary to me, not to J. J. Scaliger, who invented the system.) jd 2451545 is noon, January 1 of the year 2000. jd with no arguments gets you the particulars for the current time. jd 1995 11 30 gets you the julian day number for 1995 November 30 jd 2451545 gets you the particulars for jd 2451545; jd y m d with three arguments gets you the particulars for year y, month m, day d. jd n with one argument gets you the same for Julian Day number n. the Gregorian Calendar is assumed for dates after 1752/09/14 are Gregorian, and the Julian Calendar for dates before 1972/09/02. There are no dates in between. You can set the transition date differently for Continental Europe, but I forget how I set it up to do that.
